Drummer and Multi-Percussionist Richie Barshay is one of the most exciting and innovative new voices in modern music.  First coming to the world's attention as a member of the Herbie Hancock Quartet in 2003, Richie has since established himself as one of the most prominent new musical forces of his generation. With a foundation steeped in the Jazz tradition, Richie's playing seamlessly incorporates elements of Afro-Latin music and in recent times has further expanded to also encompass Indian rhythmic concepts and Tabla. In 2004 he was named an American Musical Envoy by the U.S. State Department, along with the renowned Latin-Jazz ensemble Insight. Recently he was recognized as "a player to watch" by the prestigious publication JazzTimes magazine.

Now based in New York City, Richie maintains a busy international touring schedule with some of today's top artists including Herbie Hancock, The Klezmatics, Kenny Werner and Chick Corea among many others. Richie recently launched his new band, The Richie Barshay Project recording their critically acclaimed debut CD "Homework".  In this fresh and vibrant recording, The Richie Barshay Project explores the common ground between Jazz and a variety of world rhythms. Inspired by studies of Indian Tabla drumming, with a foundation in Jazz and Latin-American music, the new full-length CD explores these influences in an improvisational setting. With special guests including the legendary Herbie Hancock, the listener is taken on a journey through a range of exotic musical textures, experiencing a fresh rhythmic approach to World Jazz fusion.
